Could Dean Wilson Ride For Decoster’s Team KTM One Day, As Ryan Dungey’s Teammate?
These days, in the sport of motocross, a professional racer’s loyalty to one brand is not what it used to be. Now a days, a pro rider can switch brands and teams as often as three or four times in just a few years. Dean Wilson has been a loyal Kawasaki rider for a very longtime. His podium visits have almost all been on a green bike, including lately, with Team Pro Circuit Kawasaki … where he earned his first major pro title, the 2011 Outdoor Motocross Lites Championship. Dean headed into the 2012 Lites Supercross season looking fast and smooth, hoping to grab his second major title. However, Dean ran into two major obstacles that prevented that from happening… Eli Tomac and a dislocated shoulder. Dean’s shoulder issues not only ruined his chance at a supercross title, but destroyed his hopes of winning another outdoor lites title too. Dean is healing up though and and back on the track, ready to race bar to bar again. His primary focus though, is on winning a title in 2013. Dean will be also be moving up to the 450′s soon. As a matter of fact, if he had won the 2012 Lites title, he would have been forced to ride a 450 in 2013. Dean however did not seal the victory, and can now choose to race the lites class for one more year in 2013 before having to move up to 450′s. So will he ride for Team Pro Circuit Kawasaki again in 2013 or not? We sure would think so.
A recent tweet by Wilson caught fans by surprise and stirred some typical silly season gossip that goes with professional motocross racing. The rumor was that Dean Wilson could be hired by Team KTM’s Roger Decoster for 2013 or 2014. That rumor made waves across the motocross community this week. Is the rumor a joke or does it have foundation? Well, it all started because of this tweet that the lites champion sent out saying “@tlandis47: @DeanWilson15 how does it feel to be Ryan Dungey’s teammate?” …really good! ” Truth is, as expected, it turned out to simply be a joke. One loyal Chronic MX fan named Chris…immediately brought that to our attention. The two riders happen to both be sponsored by Athena Gaskets. So technically speaking, they are ’teammates’ in regards to both being sponsored by the same manufaturer of gaskets.
All jokes aside, if KTM was looking for a new rider in 2014, Dean Wilson surely would be a good match. Maybe he really could ride for KTM in 2014 after his Pro Circuit days are over? Who knows. The talented Wilson is without question very fast and very natural. He is also disciplined in a manner that suits Decoster. In some ways, Dean’s natural riding style reminds us of several champions from the past. Wilson has slowly matured under the watchful eye of legendary coach and team owner, Mitch Payton. That kind of investment into a professional rider, along with Dean’s hunger to always win … would certainly sit well with Team KTM’s Decoster. KTM has been on an absolute tear. Team KTM has been winning almost every off road title, while setting new milestone records in both supercross and outdoor motocross. KTM’s brand appeal is rocketing, and the performance and technology of all of their bikes has improved ten fold. The Austrian company recently conquered the unthinkable, hiring the “Godfather” of motocross Roger Decoster, and signing on one of the most popular and winning-est riders, Ryan Dungey. In the sport of motocross there will always be hundreds of rumors, both true or false, anything is possible. In mid 2011 Chronic MX reported seeing James Stewart testing Suzukis at the compound. Many thought seeing James Stewart on a Suzuki was a ridiculous thought. Fast forward one year later, and sure enough, JS7 is on a yellow bike. Cheers, Chronic MX.
