Florida Amateur Motocross: Jerry Kopoian Dominates Sunshine MX 250cc Money Race on a YZ 250 two stroke
Chalk up a dominating performance for Jerry Kopoian at Sunshine’s August 6th 250cc Money Race sponsored by Cycle Springs Powersports. Kopoian looked absolutely flawless all night on his 2005 YZ 250 two stroke and finished 1-1 for the overall victory. The turnout for the race was impressive, as 31 riders lined up on the starting gate of one of Florida’s most historic local motocross tracks. Young gun RJ Hampshire was back from an injury stricken year and put in a solid ride for 2nd overall, showing everyone that he still has what it takes to be on the podium. Many other fast Floridian amateurs were present too…but lady luck didn’t come their way. Robby Renner had a DNF in Moto 2, Kevin Steele a crash in Moto 1, and Glenn Currey a tangle in Moto 2. Sunshine’s 85cc money race winner, AJ Meadows, finished a respectable 4th overall, while Rich Wilkes proved the surprise of the night. Wilkes rounded out the podium with an impressive 3rd overall. Brian Stearns was another surprise. The older rider grabbed a surprise holeshot in Moto 1 aboard his KX 250, but slowly faded as the race progressed. Kopoian was the night’s hero…railing the berms on his YZ two stroke like no one else. Kopoian had his YZ flying and pulled away both motos with a one minute lead on his competitors. He showed the crowd exactly what a 250cc two stroke can do when in the hands of the right qualified pilot, certainly a radical sight for the Chronic MotoX gang to view.
