Godspeed Florida Motocross Legend ‘Monte McCoy’, passed after coronary arrest at a private MX track in Florida

Godspeed veteran Florida MX racer Monte McCoy. Monte passed away today, November 12, 2011, at one of Florida’s infamous private MX tracks. Apparently, Monte did not crash, but died from coronary arrest while doing what he loved best, riding motocross. Chronic MX is sad to report the news, especially since he was one of our loyal hometown friends, riders and local heroes. Monte’s smile will surely be missed next time we are out at his home track, Sunshine MX in St. Petersburg, Florida. Monte was one of those riders that was fortunate enough to ride long after retiring from the sport as a professional. Monte was one of Florida’s top professional motocross racers in the 1970′s. Monte wore a #83 as a veteran racer, because it was his national number back in 1977. One of Monte McCoy’s greatest moments as a top motocross racer was winning the 500 class at Daytona, in 1976. He is honored as the last motocross racer to ever win a 500 cc Supercross…the 1976 Dallas SX. A new site named www.MonteMcCoy.net has been created to honor the fallen Florida MX legend, and to help raise money so that his daughter can complete her final year of college. Godspeed Monte McCoy, RIP. We will surely miss you, Rocket 88.

I was with him today there an I would like to ask that the writers refrain from making statements that may not be true as we do not know the official cause of death at this time. We will have it shortly and will let everyone know, as I ask that we give him the respect that he deserve’s and we have reason to believe that that some sort of natural causes may have caused him to crash after the fact.
I will let you one thing for sure, when we realized he was down he was still attached to the bike, knees around the tank and the bike was still running, so as always he was still riding it all the way to heaven.

A sad day. I just got a phone call from my friend Chip Johnson, telling me Monte passed away. I remember watching him race at Indian Dunes, man the guy could ride in the sand. It was good to see him at the Jacksonville supercross this year, and reminisce about the old days. He will be missed, my thoughts and prayers go out to his family, friends, and riding buddies.

I met Mr. McCoy for the first time yesterday, as we exchanged a few kind words in the morning, noting what a perfect day it promised to be. I though to myself at the time, you meet the nicest people through MX. To Jeff, and all of Monte’s friends and family, my condolences.

Monte will be missed. One of the most friendliest and helpful riders in the pits. A legend to us all. He would sit next to my 11 year old son in the pits and talk to him like they were lifelong friends. Priceless to me to see a legend and my little hero swapping motocross stories. You will never be forgotten.

Monte was an awsome person and a great racer in his day, he came back to racing and the sport he loved and passed doing just that. Godspeed Monte, rest in peace. You can bench race with old friends that are no longer with us as well. Yesterday was a very sad day for Florida motocrossers, as Joey Gratton also passed away from injuries suffered in an Offshore Power Boat race in Key West.

Jeff…nice to see you doing all of that for Monty and his family. Please let me know if Chronic MX can help in anyway. Monty’s spirit is exactly what ChronicMX.com is all about…for people who share a real “Motocross for Life” passion like he did, and like many of us do. He truly inspired me to keep growing the website after hanging out with him at the Jax SX. Christian

I’ve known Monte for around 8 years and I can honestly say that he was probably one of the most genuine people I have ever met. True to every sense of the word. He has always been and always will be like a brother to me. I am honored to have known him and honored to call him my friend and brother. Jeff, thank you for all that you are doing for his daughter and the memory of our good friend.

Just a quick memory. He would come over to watch football and we would end up playing the football video game…. (He loved the competition) If you knew Monte, then you know how prideful he was of his strength, guns and forearms…LOL. He would get halfway through playing the video game and start complaining that his “thumbs hurt!!!!” We used to joke all the time about that. Monte, I sure am going to miss your smile, heart and friendship. I love you man!!!

Dateline: 1976 Daytona Supercross, 500 class.
The 2 card is up, adrenalin lights him up like neon, the race starter flips the card over to the 1, clutch engaged, throttle maxed, rider poised, eyes dialed on the card. The card goes sideways and all hell breaks loose! The rider wheels over the gate in full power mode, front wheel in the air, bangin’ 5 gears all the way to the first turn on the rear wheel, sandblasting all 39 riders behind him. Schooling them in the fine art of Motocross, Florida style. Soaring to dizzying heights, scrubbin’ it down after a plateau jump, a thunderous pounding as he lands, fully compressing the state of the art suspension, 20 foot roosts as he slams it against a loamy sandy berm, feet flying in the breeze, only hands clenched to a pair of Oakley grips, sand grit in his teeth, blood in his eye, a tortured ballet, Godspeed, it’s WFO or nothing. He gives me a big smile and a “thumbs up” as he passes me. If that doesn’t kick start your heart, nothing will. Check your pulse.
Mountains are named after this guy. Girlies giggle with excitement. Other riders shake their head in amazement. Not many can tweak a bike like this guy. You been schooled boys! Take note.
Thats Monte McCoy, remember that name.
After Monte collects his winnings, kisses the the trophy girl, talks to reporters, and steps down from the podium, I congratulate him, and give him a bear hug. He gives me a wink, and says he’s gotta go, he’s got some girlies waiting for him back at the Hilton. Man, I love that dude!
Heaven must have a great Motocross team by now.
I have looked up to you for over 40 years, You have always had my respect Monte. Thank you for what you have done for me in the past and the kindness you always showed me. I love you man!
You came from nothing, no money, no silver spoon in your mouth, no pretense, just pure, raw talent and a drive and determination like no other. You willed your way, where others were unable.
Nobody owned you, you said it like it was, and I admire that. God bless you my friend, and also Roxanne and Molly. Godspeed #241.

    One last gift from Monte…
As most of us know, Monte McCoy was the
‘Real McCoy”, he would give the shirt off his back and then some.
Today was another gift from The Man.
Putting all of us Brothers together again, to mourn, wonder, laugh, tell stories, bench race, hug, shed a few tears, and to give thanks and praise.
It was a gift to me to see old race friends again. I was completely thrilled to see people like Bill West, Big Ronnie Tish, Jamie, Jo Jo Keller, Steve Martin, Dave Brunelle, Buzzy, Jeff, Mr. Pierce, Kip, David Johnson, Dwayne Lyons, Joe Knoop, Rocky Brunette, Gene King, Joe Cartier, Matt Kretchmar, Ed Garlin, Earl Parker, Billy Wood, George Stickney, Hank Stone, and many more.
Where else can you get that? No where.
It was a one time show, courtesy of The Man.
It was an original, just like The Man. Someone today said that “They broke the mold after Monte”.
    That’s a fact.
I feel comfort that he is in the arms of his loving Father now.
    Godspeed my Brother.
    Until we meet again…

I knew Monte at the ol’ Cycle Springs Yamaha/Honda World days, when he was just a kid. I remember toting him back from races, his dad was there always his “biggest fan”. Monte was an original, rumor has it they not only broke the mold after making him, they kick the mold maker’s butt! Sorry, old joke. Been a lot of years, unfortunately, since seeing him, but God Speed Monte. So sorry to hear of your passing. I hope Molly remembers me tossing her on my knee to the Bonanza theme song many, many years ago! Love, Debi
